This is one of my favorite effects. For years, I wondered how to use the delicate form of the lace leaf maple leaves I watched falling in our side yard. Finally, it occurred to me to use them as stencils. I press the fresh leaves into the green, still-wet pot, and then spray colored slip over the piece. I then pull off the leaves, and put the piece in the kiln for the first firing. A clear glaze goes over the piece for the final firing, leaving a delicate negative space design. This color is a stain called “Celeste,” which I like because it is a tranquil blue-green hue – and because it is my granddaughter’s name, as well.
